2008 Race Results

2008 dealt the riders (and the promoter) the worst weather we have ever seen in 17 years of the Tour de Christiana. Persistent thunderstorms and lightning forced us into a holding pattern from 2:25 in the afternoon until 4:00 p.m. During that time we canceled the 3/4 race and the children's races.

We restarted the racing with the category 4/5 race which upon finishing actually included a few dry spots on the pavement. The reprieve was not too last as rapidly darkening skies threatened the 1/2/3 race. After just a few laps of racing the race officials decided to announce that the race would end after just two more laps. Pouring rain on the last lap proved the wisdom of this call and the hail that followed within moments of the finish was the final exclamation point of the day.

Racers, if you want a photo of yourself looking like a tough guy racing in the rain, purchase your photo here. The photos came at a high cost to the photographer because the rain severely damaged the camera used in shooting the race.

Thanks also to the race sponsors which so generously contributed to making this race a success even under very trying circumstances. Summers & Zims, Rittenhouse Builders, Christiana Cabinetry, Stoltzfus Feed and Supply, Pro Tire, Med Trans, Kendig's Heating and Cooling, Umble Builders.

Race Update

We are looking forward to an excellent day of racing on Sunday. The finish line trailer is already in place. Registration will take place just before the finishline on the infamous Christiana Hill.

Look for lots of cash primes tomorrow in addition to the posted purses. It is going to be a great day. See you there.

17th Annual Tour de Christiana

The town of Christiana welcomes you back to the 17th annual Tour de Christiana on August 10 2008.

In the 16 years since Dave Felpel and I first promoted the Tour de Christiana, the race has grown into a regional favorite because of its demanding terrain and enthusiastic local spectators. I’m very happy to announce that the tradition will continue in 2008 in the form of the historically tough Sunday criterium. It is true that financial problems threatened the existence of the race this year. Given this challenge the local business community responded strongly to save this event as an independent race. Now after a very long absence, the original founders of the Tour de Christiana have returned to manage the event. I especially want to thank Rich Rouff for his work in helping to nurture this event over the years.
